An inspection chamber is an access point on a drainage run that allows the pipe network to be inspected, rodded and jetted from ground level without a person entering the structure. The distinction from a manhole is one of access rather than shape: a manhole is sized and constructed for personnel entry, an inspection chamber is worked from the surface. Chambers are the routine access provision on private and adoptable surface water and foul networks.

Where inspection chambers are required

An access point is needed wherever the network changes direction, changes gradient, changes diameter, receives a branch connection, or runs beyond the length that can be reliably rodded from the adjacent chambers. On surface water networks, chambers also mark the interface between private drainage and the adopted sewer. Spacing is a function of pipe diameter and the equipment used to clean it; a straight run of small-diameter pipe is normally accessible over a longer distance than a run with bends. Building Regulations Approved Document H and the water industry design and construction guidance for adoptable sewers set the framework in England.

Depth, materials and cover selection

Preformed polypropylene chambers dominate shallow work and are commonly available in 315 mm and 450 mm diameters, with restrictions on maximum depth to invert and on the cover type that may be used above them. Deeper access points, and any chamber that must accept personnel entry, move to precast concrete rings or brickwork with step irons or a ladder. Cover and frame selection follows BS EN 124 load classes: A15 for pedestrian areas, B125 for car parks and footways, D400 for carriageways. Getting the load class wrong is the single most common defect found on handover, and a failed cover in a trafficked area is both a liability and an entry point for silt.

Inspection chamber, manhole or catchpit

The three are frequently confused on drawings. An inspection chamber provides surface access to a benched channel. A manhole is large enough for a person to enter and work in, with a working chamber, access shaft and safe means of entry. A catchpit is an access chamber with a deliberate sump below the outgoing invert, sized to collect silt before it reaches downstream storage or an outfall — the sump is the defining feature, and it must be emptied on a maintenance cycle. A chamber without a sump is not a catchpit, however deep it is.

Maintenance and adoption

Access points exist so the asset can be maintained, which means they are only useful if they can be found and opened. Adoption submissions are routinely rejected for chambers buried under landscaping, chambers with the wrong cover class, and benching that has been formed so poorly that a jetting head cannot pass. A drainage asset schedule that records the position, cover level, invert level and depth of every chamber is the practical output that keeps a network maintainable over its life.
